CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification) is the Department of Defense's mandatory cybersecurity certification for any contractor or subcontractor that handles Federal Contract Information (FCI) or Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). As of CMMC 2.0 enforcement (2025+), every DoD contract — including subcontracts — requires the appropriate CMMC level before award.

What's the difference between CMMC Level 1, 2, and 3?

Level 1 (Foundational) covers 17 basic safeguarding practices for FCI and is self-assessed annually. Level 2 (Advanced) covers 110 NIST SP 800-171 controls for CUI and requires a third-party C3PAO assessment every three years. Level 3 (Expert) covers 110 NIST 800-171 controls plus subset of NIST 800-172 enhanced practices and is government-led — only for the most sensitive programs.

How long does CMMC certification take?

Most Omaha contractors need 6 to 12 months from kickoff to certification. Level 1 self-assessments can be completed in 60–90 days with proper documentation. Level 2 typically requires 9–12 months including remediation, System Security Plan development, evidence collection, and the C3PAO assessment itself.

Yes. The DoD has been explicit that CMMC flows down through every tier of the supply chain.
